![]() Why is deep sleep so important?ĭeep sleep is like the all-star player in your night’s lineup. It’s crucial for our wellbeing but is often the trickiest to nail down. Each step is vital for various body and brain functions, but it’s deep sleep that we really want to maximize. ![]() This sleep journey from stage 1 to REM repeats throughout the night, with REM periods stretching out and deepening towards morning. Curiously enough, your muscles go slack to keep you from acting out your dream-world adventures. Your eyes flit back and forth under their lids (hence the name), your breath comes in fast, irregular spurts, and your heart and blood pressure levels rise. Despite being in deep sleep, your brain starts buzzing with activity. This stage kicks in about 90 minutes after you first drift off and reoccurs every 90 minutes. Last but by no means least - the REM sleep stage. If you’ve ever woken up in the middle of a deep afternoon nap and felt confused and groggy, you’ve been in the deep sleep zone. And if you do wake up during this stage, you’re likely to feel disoriented for a few moments. Your brain waves drop into a slow, deliberate delta rhythm, which makes it harder to wake you up. Your body heals, grows, and sorts through the day’s events (and memories take shape). Now, we’re in the coveted ‘deep sleep’ zone, also known as ‘slow-wave’ sleep. These assist with memory processing and learning. Even though your brain waves slow down, sporadic bursts of activity known as ‘sleep spindles’ pop up. It’s a crucial stage of sleep, taking up about 45-50% of your total snooze time. Your heart rate slows down, your body temperature dips, and eye movement begins to still. Next up on the journey to deep sleep is stage 2. During this time, your brain churns out slow theta waves, science-talk for ‘just falling asleep.’ Ever felt a sudden jerk or like you’re falling while drifting off? That’s stage 1 sleep at play, which can be easily interrupted and full of surprises. It’s the first brief stage of sleep, which lasts a mere 5 to 10 minutes. This is the stage where you’re just starting to nod off, teetering between being awake and asleep. Understanding the stages of sleep Stage 1 of sleep So buckle up for a speedy tour of the sleep stages. To understand the importance of deep sleep (and how to get more of it), it helps to get a handle on the stages of sleep. So if you’re struggling to cope with the stresses and strains of day-to-day life, you might be dealing with a deep sleep deficit. Deep sleep plays a pivotal role in getting the sort of rest that truly rejuvenates your body and mind. When it comes to sleep, quality is just as important as quantity. Plus, learn about the stages of sleep and the reasons you might not be sleeping deeply. Discover how to get deeper, more restful sleep with our deep sleep tips.

He clearly wants to make a statement about all the injustice in the world, in between showing his abs. Furthermore, his heart seems to be in the right place. To him, there's clearly not a funny moment to be found in any of his movies, and that's why they work: because he takes them so damn seriously while nobody else does. Tommy Wiseau and James "Birdemic" Nguyen ended up ruining their charm by becoming self-aware, but I honestly don't see that happening with Breen. How much does he have to pay these beautiful young 'actresses' (models at best) to pretend they're in love with him? Why does a man who's clearly in his 50s keep casting himself as a thirty-something? Why do the characters pause roughly thirty seconds between each line? How do you hack the government on laptops that aren't even on? Why do we have to see Neil Breen semi-nude so often throughout his movies? For a guy who spells our every detail, Breen sure does leave plenty of questions. ![]() There are just so many questions that remain unanswered here. As interesting as his movies are to watch, a making-of would certainly be infinite times better. Breen doesn't even know the meaning of subtext, and that's why we all love him so much. ![]() I know this because the villains actually have to say that in all his movies. The evils are usually found in the big companies, who are driven by greed and don't care about people. Breen always casts himself as an implausibly perfect being who rids the world of all the evils. I'm writing this review for "Fateful Findings", but it could work for any of his movies. This is a guy who doesn't have to do any effort to stay weird, incomprehensible and because of that, incredibly fascinating. Breen however keeps churning them out, with no difficulties whatsoever. He hasn't made anything remotely entertaining since 2003. ![]() The main difference is that lightning only struck once for old Tommy. Because his movies are so surreal, Breen has often been compared to "The Room"'s Tommy Wiseau. He writes dialogues like English is not his first language, or even in the top five for that matter. In Breen's universe, a guy who just saw a car accident has to literally say 'I'm a witness!', because otherwise our feeble minds may not understand that complex concept. Breen doesn't trust our brains to make even the most basic connections. You know how movies are supposed to be 'show, don't tell'? Neil Breen tells and tells and tells. Neil Breen is a director who doesn't care for filmmaking rules, mainly because he doesn't know any of them. ![]() ![]() He also uses simile “It hissed like a snake. Especially the 12,000+ square feet offered at DFW. Delta lounges are the best (domestically) however still a far cry from Centurion in any airport. However, more Centurion lounges are on the horizon so will maintain Platinum level as Amex continues their growth. I struggle with the diminishing benefits of my Amex Platinum card as they relate to the annual fee. But when given the choice, always choose Centurion because I’m assured of fantastic and delicious meal options, plenty of seating, exceptional service, good wine choices. I have access to the Admirals Lounge (DFW being the AA hub this is the best of the best in D gates) as well, also Priority Pass lounges globally and Delta lounges. We are all entitled to our own opinions and have our own standards of “excellence.” Having just finished an absolutely wonderful lunch, chicken, roasted vegetables and a mixed green salad with goat cheese and am now finishing a very good glass of Cabernet, I’m confused by some of the poor reviews below. I’m sitting in the Centurion Lounge at DFW as I write this. In all, it was well-worth the train rides, to visit this Centurion Lounge, and we will return. Soon, we were off to the train, to get back to the E Terminal, and to our departure gate. I would guess that the Centurion Lounges change their wine selections every 9 months, or so. From other AMEX Centurion Lounges, I have become familiar with all of these, and enjoy them. My wife stayed with the Flor de Campo, and I had a glass of the Lovelock New Zealand Pinot Noir (shared with my wife), and the Federalist Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon. The Lounge Hostess was charming, and very welcoming, almost as though I was a frequent guest, like at the SFO Lounge, and the bartender acted like we were long-lost patrons, which in a way, I suppose we were. I think that there might be a restriction on a very few spirits, only being available to Centurion Card holder, but have never really asked, as neither of us is really a spirits drinker. However, all other wines are included with access. Usually when flying, we start with Champagne, but at the Centurion Lounges, that turns out to be Prosecco, and not one of our favorite Proseccos either - Champagne at the AMEX Centurion Lounges is only for Centurion Card holders, and I am but a lowly Platinum Card holder - so no Champagne. We had a couple of glasses of the Flor de Campo Chardonnay in hand, in moments. On this visit, we sat at the bar, which is what I would typify as “intimate,” but fairly bright. For me, another specialty is the Mexican-influenced food, in the little buffet. Each lounge has a unique specialty, such as the wine-tasting machine at SFO, and at DFW, it’s the spa. The AMEX Centurion Lounge at DFW is not as large, as a few other lounges, around the USA, but is very nice, in its compact style. Once more, luggage was dropped at E, and we headed over to D. For this June visit, it was similar, except that my wife’s meetings were downtown, and had ended, so we both got to enjoy the AMEX Centurion Lounge, for the entire time. ![]() After her meetings, I had my wife meet me there, and we proceeded over to E for departure. I had dropped my luggage off at the United counter, then used the train to get to D and the Centurion Lounge. On that first visit, my wife had morning meetings at the Hyatt attached to DFW near Terminal D, so after checking us out, I had plenty of time to kill, and though we were flying out of Terminal E, I worked in a visit to the Lounge. We do not fly into DFW that often, and never connect there, as United is our prime carrier, so it’s Houston for us. Joplin was regarded as a pioneer for female rock singers, having reached enormous popularity in a world previously dominated by men, while often being cited as one of the greatest musical artists of all time. With several notable performances and appearances on television, Joplin's new band seemed poised for great things. She emerged the following year with Full Tilt Boogie, a group of polished musicians who finally gave Joplin the space for her voice to fully bloom. Thomas Noguchi, the Los Angeles County Coroner, ruled that Joplins death was caused by an accidental drug overdose. She found a fuller sound with the Kozmic Blues Band, which performed at the Woodstock Music Festival in August 1969, but again an excessive lifestyle led to the band breaking up. She quickly became arguably the most popular female singer of her day, thanks in part to the band's second album, Cheap Thrills (1968), which featured the hit "Piece of My Heart." But drugs took their toll with the band, leading to Joplin's departure at the end of the year in pursuit of a solo career. ![]() Combining rhythm-and-blues with rock-n-roll, Joplin burst onto the scene with her first band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, following an explosive performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. There was far more emphasis on designing for women of all sizes, reflected both in the models themselves and the commentary amongst the judges and contestants. Elaine Welteroth, former editor of Teen Vogue and a Black woman, joined the judging panel which I found extremely exciting. This is not to say that season 17’s subsequent rebrand was all bad. Without the uncontested stalwarts at the helm for the 17th season, it seemed as if the show had lost its identity. Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn left to pursue other opportunities after 16 years with Project Runway. I no longer cared about, nor even agreed with what the judges thought was “in,” or “out.” Without this sense of getting special, exclusive access to the gainful opinions of fashion's elite, I no longer saw much of a point. I was ready to make my own decisions about what I wanted to wear, sourcing Instagram, Pinterest and the New York City streets for a style that felt distinctly me. I was in the spring of my sophomore year of high school, a safe distance from my wobbly-kneed, diffident self who bought white Fila Destroyers because Olivia Jade told me to. As for why, well, I have a couple of theories: And in talking to some fellow “Project Runway” fans who started watching around the time that I did, it became clear that I was not the only one. I’m not sure how a defining tradition in my life up to that point had dissolved into nothingness without my noticing, but one day I just … stopped. Looking back, though, I realize I completely forgot about “Project Runway” midway through season 17. As the panel delivered criticisms with the same vitriolic authority of Miranda Preasely’s cerulean speech in A Devil Wears Prada, I was taking notes as to what was “in,” and what was “out,” grateful I had them to show me. In all his clean-shaved, double-breasted grandeur, Tim Gunn could make a designer question their entire existence with an only slightly perceptible side-eye at their dressed mannequin. Then, of course, there was workroom mentor Tim Gunn. Most likely, though, it was exclusive access to the secret deliberations amongst those I viewed as sovereigns of aesthetics and elegance that fueled my addiction.Īmong the panel of judges that season was designer Michael Kors, whose Rockefeller Center store was one of my favorite places to window shop at as a kid Nina Garcia, fashion editor at Marie Claire magazine, with the luscious, L’Oréal-commercial-level curtain bangs, and the runway-owning, beauty-honing Heidi Klum who regularly drew “Ooos,” “Ahhs,” and likely some “Why haven’t I thought of that?”s when she approached the seated contestants in a stunning new get-up to announce the next challenge. ![]() The workspace is utter and complete chaos, but out of the carnage emerges whatever number of brilliantly dressed models strutting past the panel of judges with such nonchalance that you almost forget they were zipped in just minutes before in the dark wings backstage. During those final hours in the studio, fingers are pricked by sewing needles, multicolored thread is held in between teeth like floss and fabric scraps fly through the air like confetti in true New Year's Day fashion. Or maybe it was the second-hand, heart-pumping adrenaline. ![]() Perhaps he was the one who got me hooked. Costa’s personality was understated he was never the loudest, most stressed, most rambunctious member of the crew, but his quiet gracefulness demanded attention during each final show. He boasted a broad bank of technical skills that were almost too acute to be noticed. His designs had an air of effortlessness that can only be achieved with an exorbitant amount of effort. This particular season, Fabio Costa, the future runner-up, was my favorite. When Tim Gunn announces the formidable “Your time starts now!” in his iconic, velvety bravado, the contestants appear to defy the first law of thermodynamics and make something out of nothing. As a second grader with a new paper doll fashion design set from F.A.O Schwarz, I had turned to “Project Runway” for the ingenuity and fervor I hoped to harness on my construction paper and glitter: elegant drapery, intricate bodices, exquisite tailoring … all brilliantly executed before the lights dim for the start of the runway show. I hopped on the “Project Runway” bandwagon in 2012. Please refer to the SSH documentation for details.
